We estimate that there were around 20 original fish present in the lake when we purchased it. Many of these have remained uncaught, some being seen regularly around spawning time. However, there are several of these fish which have been on the bank and these include two forties (48Ibs 2ozs and 48Ibs10 ozs). These fish have continued to grow steadily over the past three seasons and it looks more than possible that both will break the 50Ib barrier in the next season or two.
We have now stocked around 280 Carp into the lake over the past 5 seasons and have now reached our target of around 300 fish. As Future Fisheries (link to fish farm site) we grow and sell our fish widely and so in time we will have 1000’s of fish to select from for the Fishery. In the future our additions will be just a few very select fish to add to the excellent Italian strain Mirrors, stunning Commons and beautiful Mirrors from the Leney Dink and Sutton Dink strains.
Our initial stockfish have grown between 3-8Ibs a year over the past 3 years averaging around 4-5Ibs growth per annum.
At present 90% of the first 59 stocked have made 25Ibs plus, with a good number now over 30Ibs. The biggest stockfish to date is 47Ibs plus and this is backed up by both a Mirror and Common at 43Ibs 12 ozs and a Common of 42Ibs. There is also at least one Common that was 38Ibs 2 years ago and has not been caught since. Even some of the fish from subsequent stockings have made 30Ibs growing from 8- 10Ibs in two seasons. Our Leney Dink stockfish introduced between 7-9Ibs in February 2014 were being caught between 24- 32Ibs by the 2016-17 winter!
In the winter 0f 2015-6 we completed our stocking of Sutton Dinks introducing around 100 fish between 6-11Ibs. These were amazing, very scaly specimens and they are already showing signs of exceptional growth and as of summer 2017 are being caught between 14-20Ibs.
